Is there an Ahly match today or is it just Valentine's Day?
You know, for a predominately Muslim country, Egypt sure enjoys Christian holidays. Ok, so there's nothing particularly religious about Valentine's Day (or Christmas in most places for that matter), but it's like all of Cairo has exploded this week in a riot of hearts, flowers and gigantic stuffed animals. It is, as Bernard would say, redonkulous.
Moving on. We're well into the swing of things in CASA now and I'm finding I have a lot more work than I expected. It's at least as time consuming as last semester, but the work requires much more rubbing together of brain cells, which is a welcome change, actually. My Civil Society & Development professor is quite a character. Besides "adopting" us at the start of the semester, Doktora Hiba has been buying us books and supplies for the class, bringing us chocolate to help get us through our seminar meetings and burning fragant incense cone during discussion. I have my second meeting of my Qur'an seminar this afternoon; last night I spent some quality time studying the first 46 ayat of the Sura al-Baqara and was marvelling at how rich the language is. Since recitation is part of our class as well, I've been listening to recordings to help me with proper pronunciation etc. Is it so beautiful and moving to listen to. I'm glad this class gives me an excuse to make time for that.
It rained here late last night. So strange to wake up to a damp, grey Cairo.
