It's Beginning to Look A Lot Like Ramadan...

My A'amia class went on a little field trip to Saida Zeinab after school to check out the markets that are gearing up for Ramadan, which begins next week. Lanterns in all shapes, colors and sizes are de rigeur for the holiday, and we saw a ton of stalls selling stacks of them next to vendors of dried fruits - apricots, figs, dates, etc - which are also a necessary staple of the season.

Shops and restaurants all over have already begun festooning their doorways with lanterns and colorful fabric banners, and you can really feel the excitement beginning to build in the air. Among the ex-pats, it's more like panic, however, as all the alcohol vendors in the city apparently shut down for the month-long holiday. From what I hear, Drinkie's, a favorite local delivery service in Zamalek, is just about sold out of anything and everything resembling beer. Yikes.
