San Fran-tastic

So, the night before I hopped a flight out to San Fran to visit my sister, Mary, who just moved into a phatty-phat house with ocean views, my little cousins, Alex and Jessica, and a half dozen friends, I sat down to watch a movie with my parents.

Mom had rented "a very famous Korean movie" called Wang ui Namja, which, as is apparent from the opening scene, is a richly detailed period film set in the time of the Joseon dynasty.

It also is apparent from the first ten minutes of the film that its main characters are two gay clowns.

Now, I have nothing against gay people, clowns, or gay clowns for that matter, but watching a film that depicts attempted homosexual seduction, heterosexual foreplay and a slew of crude sexual physical comedy, mostly involving gourds, with my parents was...uncomfortable to say the least.

Not that this seemed to bother my mother, who felt the need to explain to me that the two main characters "are both boys."

I failed to stick it out through the entire film, but I would definitely try to track it down to watch again (minus my parents). Apparently it is the highest grossing Korean film in history, and from what I saw it has a lot to offer - an interesting storyline (based on historical fact), comedy, drama, beautiful costumes and sets.

This would be in direct contrast to the film I watched with Mary and her boyfriend, Mike, tonight, which would be The Fast and the Furious. At the very least, I think this will make The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift even better than it looks in the slammin' previews.
